Why is it cheaper to fly through Houston than to Houston?

Continental charges $450 dollars to fly from LFT to LAS with a layover in Houston. On the same dates using the same flights it costs $850 to fly directly to Houston. Is it possible to buy a ticket to LAS for $400 less and just stay in Houston (miss your connection)? Why is it $400 cheaper when they are carrying you 2400 extra miles?

probably because so few people want to fly just LFT-IAH....and because they are the only airline on the route, so they can charge what they like!

Sure you can miss your connection and not go to LAS. Be aware, though, that you will not be able to get back on in IAH and fly back to LFT--they'll cancel your whole itinerary if you no-show IAH-LAS

There are many factors, including demand of the terminal and the fees the airport charges. Since a layover doesn't technically "land" at the airport, it doesn't charge the same runway fee as it would if it was the final destination.

"Missing" your connection can be tricky, you can never predict how they co-ordinate layover flights. Sometimes they have an airline associate guide the group of layover passengers, while other flights will simply give you the next gate number. Obviously it would be nearly impossible to hide away from the associate unless you hid in the washroom or something. So I would say follow this system, as you could be fined or at the very least look very bad if they found out you did this to save money.

You can do that, and you will be recorded as not showing up for the connecting flight (a "no show").

HOWEVER:
- if you check any luggage - that will be a real problem, because you won't get it back in Houston.
- if this is the outbound leg of a round-trip ticket, then the return segments will be canceled and the ticket will not be valid for any of the return flights.
