What caused Houston to grow in the early 20th century?

What caused Galveston to fall, and Houston to become the biggest city? A popular story is the 1900 hurricane, but are there any other reasons, like the ship channel and Spindletop? Links would be greatly appreciated.

HoustonAnswers 		Many factors plays role in making this city 4th largest and least affected by recession.

1. Oil & Gas industries
2. Affordable Housing
3. Houston Port making cost of living cheap
4. Less Natural problems other than seasonal Hurricane

I guess everything plays important factor.

KatyMills 		Well,one thing about Houston is our Port.It's pretty big,and we have alot of nationalities down here.
