Are the suburbs of Houston better than the city itself?

I know that Harris County has many wealthy places and so are many of the suburbs; especially Sugar Land . But would that make the suburbs better places than Houston itself; especially in terms of cleanliness and safety?

Please explain...

StewartJ 		Most people will say the suburbs are better than the City of Houston. The suburbs are usually safer and cleaner. I would rather live in the city than the suburbs.

PriyaM 		I like the suburbs. Houses there are usually better tended. There are lower crime rates. The shopping selections are better.

Think:

Clear Lake,
Friendswood,
League City,
The Woodlands,
Kingwood,
Katy,
Sugarland,
Pearland...........

HoustonMytown 		Burbs are waaay better. Dont let others steer U wrong haha..Cypress/Katy/Spring and Tomball are ur best bet. Lower crime. Cleaner area and the eateries dont look like someone threw up in them or smell bad. I visist the city but the bums are like cockroches that bother U constantly and the crime/smell are why id stay away.

KatyMills 		Oh yes the Suburbs are way better. Born here in Houston and raised here for the most part.

Houston is one of the biggest commuter cities in the US. But every large city has its nicer and not so nice areas. The Suburbs is mainly for growing Families so the amount of crime is alot less in these areas. Still we are the 4th largest City in the US and for Violent crimes we are 21st. And many Cities listed behind us in violent crime only have 1/2 or less the population we do.

You factor that in with suburban areas having less crime Houston is a safe US City as far as crime goes. But as with any City you need to excersise common sense. Dont stop in unkown areas know your surrondings dont stop late at night.

I used to Chauffeur as well. Ive been bout everywhere in this City. Try being in a TownCar in a Black Suit and tie at 4 in the morning off of Crosstimbers and Little York at the corner store and having a Girl whos standing outside the store with 2 Gentleman walk up and say "Are You a Fed?" My 1st response "Excuse Me". "A Fed are you a Federal Agent" Brain started to wake up then 2nd response "Is there a problem miss?" She walked off mumbling. I walked inside got my drink kept looking their direction and got back to the car and left. Just keep your wits about you. But wouldnt recommend going off of crosstimbers at 4am, or really any other time for ya.

KatyMills 		Houses in the suburbs are more affordable than the neighborhoods that are close in, but you are so far away from the city and the commute can really get tiring. We live in a small house in the city because we like to be close to our work. We could have bought a big house out in Katy or Sugarland but we did not want the long commute. Of course if you can afford it there are plenty of neighborhoods with big homes in the city.

StewartJ 		Some people esp families with children want quiet neighborhoods without as much "activity". That's why many live in suburbs. There are nice areas inside AND outside Houston city limits.
