why do people call houston the largest city?

in terms of area. I looked in the wikipedia, it is shown as number 10. The first 3 cities are shown to be in alaska. While considering metropolitan area, even jacksonville is larger than houston. But I am not sure why people in houston think that it is the largest city in US.

StewartJ 		I don't know what you are reading but Houston has been called the 4th largest city behind New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, for years. No one has ever said Houston was the largest city in the U.S. In fact Houston's population is much larger but can't be counted as accurately for many reasons. I don't know why this seems to bother you so much. Houston is big, deal with it

SultanE 		I'm not sure what you're looking at. Houston is the fourth largest city in the country. Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, is only number 66 on the list. Alaska is the largest state, which may be contributing to your confusion.

In short, double check your stats.

HoustonMytown 		read again there genius, especially the part about "consolidated counties-cities"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_area

The list is headed by consolidated city-counties and so may include significant portions of rural areas or even wilderness. When these cities are removed from consideration, the largest cities are Oklahoma City, Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Antonio

i'm not sure what you ARENT understanding, it's pretty clear to me.
